“Spirited Away” Dogo Onsen Hot Spring Annex Opens!

Dogo Onsen is one of Japan’s oldest and most famous hot springs, located to the east of central Matsuyama. The area is popular with tourists for its beautiful bath house and many ryokan.

The main attraction in Dogo Onsen is the Dogo Onsen Honkan, a Meiji Period wooden public bathhouse, dating from 1894. The interior of the Honkan is a maze of stairways, passages and rooms, all of which bustle with bathers and staff.

All onsen-lovers and Ghilbi fans should make a pilgrimage to Dogo Onsen located in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. With a history of over 3,000 years. The magnificent Dogo Onsen Honkan provided the inspiration for Japan’s popular animated film, Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away”.

A new hot spring bath house has opened at Dogo Onsen. The new structure, called Dogo Onsen Bekkan Asukanoyu, was annexed to the long-established main building at a cost of nearly 18-million dollars.

Many tourists and residents could be seen enjoying the facility from the moment it opened on 26th Sep.

The design of the building incorporates architectural styles from the Asuka period, about 1400 years ago. A regent and politician from that era, Shotoku Taishi, is said to have visited the hot spring.

The lobby and rest areas are colorfully decorated with traditional arts and crafts of the prefecture.

Pictures on the walls of the bathing rooms depict local scenery such as the Seto Inland Sea. State-of-the-art technology has been used to show scenes such as boats sailing on the ocean.

A local university student said he had been in line since Monday and found the bath very relaxing. He said he was surprised at the beauty of the decor.
