Lanterns of Aomori Nebuta Festival

Hotel Gajoen Tokyo was first built as first-class Japanese style restaurant and became first banquet and wedding ceremony hall in Japan, and now is a hotel with beautiful Japanese banquet and wedding ceremony halls. It was said that luxurious decoration of beautiful Japanese painting, ceiling and ranma which outstanding painter and craftsmen dealt with showed the best terminus ad quem of traditional sense of beauty and was appointed in tangible cultural property of Tokyo.

The Hyakudan Kaidan pavilion at Meguro’s Hotel Gajoen puts on a real light extravaganza, with installations depicting some of Japan’s most famous summer festivals and seasonal colour schemes projected onto the ceilings and walls inside the gorgeous building, a Registered Tangible Cultural Asset. You can also admire enamel pieces, woodwork and other creations by master craftspeople, plus early-Showa era art displayed on the premises. Although the interior of the structure doesn’t exactly bathe in light during the day either, visiting after dark will reveal its full splendour.

Aomori Nebuta Festival, of Hokusai ukiyo-e prints or of sculptures and various textures, it is present in almost all rooms and makes the light virtually tangible. Even though some of the installations might seem too modern art-y for such a classic setting (works by contemporary artists alternate with classics from the Early Showa period i.e. the time the Gajoen was built), the overall result is truly amazing.

Each banquet room has its own theme of lighting, you can enjoy various Japanese lighting.
