Summer festivals called (”Natsu Matsuri”in Japanese )are held in July and August all over Japan and this is the time you can have wonderful experience and spend amazing time to feel traditional summer atmosphere. Japanese summer festivals are very unique and traditional. If you are in Japan for this summer, this could be the most incredibul and fun thing to experience in Japan! Ikimasho!! (Let’s go!!)

Aomori Nebuta Festival


One of the biggest Japanese festivals which attracts over 2 million people every year in Aomori Prefecture. Illuminated NEBUTA floats are carried thorough the city with carriers & dancers in traditional costumes. You can actually join the local people dancing around the Nebuta floats, who are called Haneto, and you are very welcomed to participate to the festival without any pre-registrations. All you need is to wear Haneto costume just like locals! Here is a list of shops providing the costume rental service near the festival site:

Kyoto Gion Festival

The other biggest Japanese festivals has been held in Kyoto for over 1,000 years, which is Gion Matsuri held by Yamahoko-cho in Kyoto. Gion Festival’s main ceremony is massive parades with lanterns and portable shrines which are built for the festival with finest craft art and carried though Yamahoko town by local carriers in traditional festival costumes. The festival lasts for a month (July) with main traditional events for 2 days: Sakimatsuri (the first festival on 17th July) and Atomatsuri (the later festival on 24th July.)

Awaodori Festival @ Tokushima

The biggest Japanese traditional dance “Bon Odori” festival which attracts over 1 million people every year in Tokushima,Shikoku. Numbers of groups of traditional dancers go through the city. Dates from 12th to 15th August.

Tanabata Festival @ Hiratsuka,Kanagawa

The star festival which celebrates the meeting of lovers separated by the milky way. The street will be with a loads of decorated colorful streamers and food stalls. Dates from 8th to 10th July.

Tenjin Festival @ Osaka

The biggest festival in Japanese second largest city,Osaka with the land procession with portable shrines and river procession by boats and massive fire works. Dates 24th and 25th July.
