A tango-tempo massage in Argentina

At the Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, guests can book the Porteño Tango, an 80-minute massage treatment performed in sync with the beats of Argentinean tango music.

Even if you do not know adelante (forward) from atrás (backwards), you can get a taste of tango in Argentina without ever stepping foot on the dance floor.

Instead, swap the fast-paced steps for a therapist’s relaxing hands at the Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires, where the Porteño Tango is an 80-minute massage treatment performed in sync with the beats of Argentinean tango music.

The treatment starts with a red wine and vitamin E exfoliant applied all over the body to scrub away dry skin cells. The spa therapist then places hot stones along the guest’s back to relax the muscles before starting massage strokes synchronised to one of 16 tango tracks on a rotating playlist. Deep tissue massage can also be added at the guest’s request. The treatment ends with a shiatsu foot massage where pressure is applied to acupuncture points that allow for the better flow of energy throughout the body.

The upbeat treatment is not for the faint of heart.  “The tango massage is a strong one,” said Vanesa Rigel, spa assistant manager at the Four Seasons. “We absolutely recommend this treatment for those who want to feel an energetic massage and for those that want to know more about Argentinean culture.”

The Porteño Tango costs 1,080 Argentine pesos, and can also be booked as a couples’ treatment for those who do not want to leave their partner solo on the dance floor.
