Fans are already lining the streets to become the first to see the new Star Wars film, “The Last Jedi,” when it hit theaters tonight. And while the film will most certainly be a huge success, we’re betting that many of you may experience a bit of déjà vu when watching it.
That’s because one of the film’s new worlds, the casino planet of Canto Bight, is actually the very same location as Game of Thrones’ King’s Landing, according to Nerdist.
As Nerdist further explained, the revelation came in a little behind-the-scenes video for the new movie where director Rian Johnson discusses the movie’s filming locations, which included the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is also the set of the HBO hit’s capital of Westeros.
And the real city of Dubrovnik, Money explained, has become so popular thanks to Game of Thrones that it will actually soon be forced to turn tourists away.
“We became too popular in the last couple of years, we became a victim to our own success,” Ivan Vukovic, a tour operator in the city, told Money. “So many more Americans and Canadians come here because of the show. It is easier to learn history if you connect it to some scenes from the show as it has a lot of medieval history in common.”
However, this uptick in tourism could cause the city to lose its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So in response, Mato Franković, the city’s mayor, told the Telegraph that he will cap the number of visitors to the city to 4,000 per day, which is half of its current limit of 8,000 allowed by UNESCO.
“We will lose money in the next two years — a million euros maybe by cutting the number of tourists — but in the future, we will gain much more,” he said. “We deserve to be a top-quality destination.”
Though honestly, if they thought Game of Thrones would bring in more tourists we aren’t quite sure how to break it to them that Star Wars is even more popular. Perhaps they should build an even higher wall to fend off the impending flood of Wookies, Storm Troopers, and Jedis to come.
