Trip to Japan

Ricky Lai

I have recently been to Japan with my family for a 9 days holiday and I’m sharing some photos from my trip.

Over the 9 days we went to various places within the cities of Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka.

It’s an different photography experience for me when travelling as a family, as my photography focus is mainly on them. But nevertheless, I still manage to capture what caught my eyes along that journey.

Off to Kamakura on the 2nd day via train from Tokyo to Kamakura, train is the most common way to travel around and it’s a also a place when one can have 40 winks before the destination.

The Buddha statue went through cleaning and checks during March and was recently re-open to the public.

With the Sakura season ending, I thought I wouldn’t been able to catch any glimpse of the flowers, but to my surprise I manage to see some while at the temple.

A must go food place whenever I am in Tokyo & not sure if he will be moving to the new Tsukiji market later this year.

Here he is cooking 11 bowls of ramen at one go, he cooks all the noodles together and without the use of any timers. He will fill the bowls with soup before the noodles goes in and his assistant will do the topping up of slices of lean pork, bamboo shoots & spring onions.

Off to Kyoto from Tokyo via Shinkansen, I managed to snap a photo of the lady cleaning up the cabin before we are allowed to board.

All in all it’s about 15 minutes or less for all these procedures and all I have to say it really efficient!

Though it’s not the fastest train I ever took, but it’s quiet in the cabin and one can easier have some rest till the destination.

Here we are in Kameoka after we alight from the “Romantic train” ride from Saga-Arashiyama Station. Weather was beautiful and it’s the only place I felt cold due to the strong winds.

I saw quite a lot of plantation land so I asked the lady at the tourism counter and was told those are rice paddy fields.

Planting season starts in May and harvest in October/November period.

While exploring the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, we came across a Japanese couple having their wedding photo shoot and they did attract a little crowd around them.

Bride was dress in a stunning red kimono!

A quiet & peaceful neighbourhood as we walked out of the Bamboo grove, we enjoyed walking around and looking at their houses.

A beautiful store, one should walk in to take a look at the interior.

After my visit to Leica Kyoto shop, I came across this gentleman taking photos of the two ladies and also happy chatting with them.

Write your wishes and hang here. Two ladies dress in kimono at the background.

Did a short visit to Tōfuku-ji, but didn’t manage to explore around much as we were running short of time travelling multiple places. This temple buildings are huge and the surrounding were quiet.

Aritsugu — A famous knife crafts shop over at Nishiki market, Kyoto. Here the craft man is engraving personalise name onto the metal basin by hands.

Visiting Aquarium is one of my interest whenever I travel, especially when it house whale sharks. It has one super huge tank in the middle of the building and many viewing spots around it. This gives visitors space to view without cramping all of them together.

One tank that still wow me is over at Georgia Aquarium, the main viewing space is like an IMAX screen and I sat there for an hour watching the fishes swarm around.

I have an good experience over here and will visit if I do get a chance to be back in Osaka.

The next tank I would like to visit will be in Okinawa — Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium!

This lone seal decided to take a break at the viewing gallery and it’s a photographers field day by firing their shutters to capture the moment.

Love this train that runs by Hankyu, it’s give me the feel of the old yet it’s feel news inside it.

It was nice being back at Japan after skipping it for 1 year or so and it’s also refreshing to visit other cities for the first time since I always visited Tokyo. One can definitely feel the difference in culture and people.

All photos are shot using Leica M & 35mm except for the Sakura flower which was shot using 75mm. No cropping is done with all photos.

Thanks for visiting!
