You can visit a nostalgic, historical town from Tokyo in 30 min. The town is located in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, called “LITTLE EDO” or “COEDO,” which stems from that a part of its areas reserves the old castle town of the Edo period (19th century.) It provides you with the nostalgic atmosphere, tasty foods, and snacks instead of Ninja or Samurai.

Highlights

The Little Edo has Kashiya Yokocho Alley, a small backstreet where a lot of stores sell old-fashioned cheap snacks along the alley.

Green Tea Soba Noodle (Cha-Soba), made from buckwheat and green tea, is one of the most popular foods in Kawagoe.

Grilled Rice Ball is also famous for a way to eat rice more deliciously, which is accentuated by dried bonito flakes.

A potato is one of the specialties in Kawagoe. Steamed potato-jam buns are recommended to have in a steaming hot condition.

The other portable food made from potato is the potato flavored ice cream. So sweet!

Why don’t you wander around the town with COEDO Beer? It is the local crafted beer and evaluated around the world. It has several species of its flavors, so how about finding you favorite. Let’s just feel them!

The symbol there highlights the whole of the Little Edo town. It is known as Toki-no-kane (Bell Tower) built 400 years ago ringing to tell us the time four times a day on 6 am, noon, 3 pm and 6 pm. Fortunately, you may hear its sound.

It takes 30 min to get there from Ikebukuro(Tobutojo-line) and about 50 min form Shinjuku(Saikyo-line.) Which means you can experience that old “Japan” town although you don’t necessarily have to go to Kyoto.
