Yokohama is to Tokyo as Coney Island is to NYC

Matthias Rhoads

Yokohama is Japan’s second largest city by population after Tokyo. Yokohama is a port city, and its main attractions are its art museums, numerous brand-new shopping centers, luxurious hotels with rooftop pools, and Cosmo World, a beautifully lit theme park located right on the bay. It’s a must-see at night. I met up with my friend Yukie and we partook in the theme park activities, such as riding the Cosmo Clock, which was once the world’s largest Ferris wheel, and the roller coaster Vanish, as well as grubbing on some of the freshest sushi the Japanese port city has to offer.

The theme park includes a Pikachu water ride that gets you soaked (if I know anything about Pokemon it should have been Blastoise-based). The whole bay-side is luminous with neon lights that follow the contours of the rides and buildings and spotlights that paint the sides of buildings after dark.

A view from outside the shopping center where I met up with Yukie.

Unreal, melt-in-your-mouth baked salmon mayonnaise nigiri. So good I had to have two.

As you can tell, this piece was a bit hurried and not as artistically created and sliced, but equally as delicious.

Very unique sushi. This is consisted of umibudo, which is a type of seaweed with little egg-like polyps on the side that pop and burst in your mouth with a sweet-yet-savory seafood flavor that is unlike anything you’ve ever had before. Technically translating to English as “sea-grapes,” in Japan, umibudo can only be harvested in Okinawa as it is very rare. When I was eating it, I thought that perhaps it was the eggs of some sort of foreign fish I have never had before. Very soft and succulent texture. Umai!

So scrumptious! This sushi consists of Nama Shirasu, which are baby sardines. Enoshima has a beach that is known for these little guys. They are blanched in salt water, intense in flavor and have a slippery texture. Garnished with ginger and negi to balance out the flavor.

There were many more dishes, but these three were the ones that stood out to me the most.

I want to thank you, Yukie, for showing me an awesome time! Had so much fun here at Yokohama. Tanoshī!

Matane!
