Its third stop in 50 years is the sleek Zaha Hadid-designed Riverside Museum, which opened on 21 June by the River Clyde in Glasgow. The exhibition provides a new home to historic Scottish trams and steam engines, and hosts a re-creation of a typical Glasgow street from 1890 to 1980. The museum even has its own berth – but beware if you’re thinking of docking here: there’s currently a 19th-century tall ship taking up the parking space.

The Riverside Museum opened on 21 June. The tall ship Glenlee, berthed by the museum, opened on the same day (free; open from 10am). The M6 runs north from Rugby. Trains to Glasgow operate from Edinburgh (from £11.30; scotrail.co.uk), Bristol (from £63; thetrainline.com) and London (from £47.50; southernrailway.com). National Express buses serve Glasgow from London (from £12.50). Stay in Glasgow’s leafy East End at Cathedral House Hotel, a baronial-style hall (from £87.50).
