Pencil It In — Events that pack a punch

Eventerprise.com

We’ve travelled far and wide to bring you this week’s round up of top global events. It’s a journey of passion, euphoria, tradition, and nail biting action. Expect the unexpected…

Barrakud — Zrce, Pag Island, Croatia: August 8–15 August, 2015

Looking for a 7 night party, set in paradise? Welcome to Barrakud, where your dreams become reality! Set on the beautiful Croatian island of Pag, this festival merges blissful relaxation with the unleashing of your inner party animal; its beauty lies in how these vast contrasts synergise. At Barrakud you’re not a mere audience member, rather you will be whisked away from reality to re-discover yourself.

Tetsuya Odori — Gujohachiman, Japan: August 13–16, 2015

A feudal lord’s vision to allow the rich and poor to socialise as equals, is now one of Japan’s most significant dance festivals. Running from mid-July to September, ten dances are performed throughout the town, with the highlight being Tetsuya Odori (13–16 August), when the masses gather to dance from 8 until the early hours of the morning. For an authentic experience, hire a kimono and DANCE, for this is “a dance to be danced”, and not “a dance to be viewed”.

Il Palio — Siena, Italy: August 16, 2015

Held twice a year on 2 July and 16 August, Il Palio is horse racing of a different breed. Horse owners from all over Siena donate their horses to represent the city’s various wards (contrada) for the prestigious race, with no purebreds allowed. As one can imagine, each horse is aptly decorated in elegant headgear, and assigned a top jockey. Not too different to a normal horse race, right? Think again. The event is a free-for-all, with jockeys allowed to do anything and everything to their opponents. Seabiscuit, meets Gladiator! It is not uncommon to have races where more than half of the jockeys are bucked from their saddles. Not to worry, the winner is the first horse that crosses the finish line, with or without its jockey. Although the main event lasts usually less than two minutes, the festivities continue for another four days. Definitely one for the bucket list.

US PGA Championship — Whistling Straits Course, Kohler, Wisconsin, USA: August 13–16, 2015

The US PGA Championship, the last of the four major championships in the professional golfing season, returns to the beautiful Whistling Straits for the first time in 5 years. It is always one of the most exciting and fascinating tournaments, attracting phenomenal crowds. Will we have a repeat of last season’s thrilling finish? Let’s hope!

Tango Buenos Aires Festival — Buenos Aires, Argentina: August 12–25, 2015

Seductive, sexy and provocative — the tango is considered one of the truest embodiments of passion. And come August, it becomes the centrepiece of one of Argentina’s most successful festivals. The two-week long extravaganza attracts over 400,000 people, and has been described as both fascinating and entertaining. Dancer or not, you will be blown away by this spectacle. Who knows, it may even leave you believing in love at first sight…
