1 Sushi

Put simply, sushi is raw fish served on rice seasoned lightly with vinegar. It’s in the variety of flavours and textures that things get interesting.

Tips!! Not all sushi are expensive. You can find really cheap sushi in Japan.

2 Ramen

Ramen, egg noodles in a salty broth, is Japan’s favourite late night meal. In fact, Ramen has been imported from China, which tells us the huge impact of Chinese foods on Japanese foods. There are four major soup styles: tonkotsu (pork bone), miso, soy sauce and salt.

Tips!! It is really hard to find ramen for vegetarian. All ramen soup contain meat. If you are a vegetarian, you have to ask a special offer.

3 Unagi

Unagi is river eel grilled over charcoal and lacquered with a sweet barbecue sauce. According to folklore, unagi is the ideal antidote to the heat and humidity of Japan’s stultifying summers. It’s a delicacy evocative of old Japan and most restaurants that specialize in eel have a wonderfully traditional feel.

Tips!! Unagi’s best season is in the summer.

4 Tempura

Light and fluffy tempura is Japan’s contribution to the world of deep-fried foods. The seafood and vegetables are traditionally fried in sesame oil and served with either a tiny pool of salt or a dish of soy sauce-flavoured broth spiked with grated radish for dipping.

Tips!! You can get cheap tempura in the street restaurant, but i strongly recommend to eating tempura in the good restaurant. To eat good tempura, you should book restaurants in advance not to miss amazing experience.

5 Shabu-Shabu Shabu-shabu is the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of thin slices of beef or pork being swished around with chopsticks in boiled water. It takes only a moment to cook and you can enjoy mouthful moment.

Tips!! Usually Japanese people go to the buffet Shabu-Shabu restaurant, cause Shabu-Shabu is bit of expensive and, in the buffet style, we can enjoy variety kinds of foods.

6 Okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki is Japanese comfort food at its best and called as “Japanese Pizza”. It’s a savoury pancake filled with any number of things and topped with fish flakes, dried seaweed, mayonnaise and a Worcester-style sauce. At most restaurants, diners grill the dish themselves on the hotplate.

Tips!! If you are vegetarian or your friend is vegetarian, I strongly recommend to eat Okonomiyaki, cause you can choose ingredients yourself. Okonomiyaki is the best food for all people including vegetarians.

7 Tonkatsu Tonkatsu, breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet, was invented when Japan started importing Western culutures in the late 19th century. But never mind the European origin: the ingredients and attention to detail are Japanese. Tonkatsu is melt-in-your-mouth tender, served with a miso soup and a shredded cabbagge!!

8 Yakitori A few skewers of yakitori is a special evening dish for most Japanese people. Nearly every part of the chicken is on the menu, all grilled to perfection, seasoned with either shio (salt) or a sweet soy sauce-based sauce.

9 Kaiseki Part dinner, part work of art, kaiseki is Japan’s haute cuisine. It originated centuries ago alongside the tea ceremony in Kyoto. There’s no menu, just a procession of small courses like French course. Only fresh ingredients are used and each dish is designed to evoke the current season.

Tips!! Most Kaiseki restaurants are fancy. You should get the reservation in advance to make sure you can eat good Kaiseki restaurant.

10 Soba Soba has long been a staple of Japanese cuisine, particularly in the mountainous regions where hardy buckwheat fares better than rice. The noodles are served on a bamboo mat with broth on the side for dipping.
