One of the greatest places to visit in Japan is a castle, indeed. The beautiful and historical treasures stand still since 16th century from north to south of Japan. Each castles tell us the history of the cities. Let’s discover Japan’s best historic part!

Japanese castles (“Shiro” in Japanese) were fortresses constructed primarily of wood and stone. They evolved from the wooden stockades of earlier centuries, and came into their best-known form in the 16th century. Castles in Japan were built to guard important or strategic sites, such as ports, river crossings, or crossroads, and almost always incorporated the landscape into their defenses. (Ref:Wikipedia)
Reportedly there used to be over 25,000 castles in Japan before Edo period. Wow!
After 20th century with new movements, wars, natural disasters and so on, many of castles has been destroyed completely or fatally damaged. Most of castles remain in Japan has been partly reconstructed.
There are only 12 castles remaining without re-constructed.

Most of Japanese castles are constructed for defense, surrounded by the multiple groove rings. The castle tower stood in the main circle and the lords usually lived at a more comfortable residence in the secoud circle.
