Do You Believe in the TREASURE ISLAND?

Yusukes

The answer should be Yes. The Treasure Island which is called Takarajima is in Japan. Speaking of the Treasure Island, many of you may imagine the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. In fact, it is a popular saying that it was made out of the Japan’s island which is one of the chain of southernwest islands in Kagoshima Prefecture. It must be a hidden spot since only a few tourists visit there, or don’t even know its existence.

Referring to the final paragraph on the above board in Takarajima:

It is considered that this island was the model of “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, and pirates lived here and buried their enormous treasures. Thus, there are dream and roman here.

Let’s Start to Explore the Treasure Island!

It is heart-shaped and you can go around the island within 3–4 hours by foot.

Proceed through the mountain feeling its untouched nature.

Heading for upland area, but…

Cows block a path to the highest view point! However, they don’t attack you.

The beautiful scenery wait for you!

Ogomori Beach

Nextly, what about sea? Needless to say, it is one of the most alluring points. The color of the ocean is different between north of one (Ogomori Beach) and south of one (Takarajima Port.) The former is exremely clear and the latter is turquoise blue. You can’t see these colors of oceans in main land.

There is a beach house you can stay at in front of the Ogomori beach. Surprisingly, it spends approximately JPY1,000- per a night to stay there.

Just out of the house, you can jump into the perfectly clear sea immediately after waking up!

Takarajima Port

On the other hand, the color of the south sea is beautiful beyond words, nevertheless, it would be called turquoise blue instead of emerald green, if I have to say.

Oma Harbor

In the evening, you would be super lucky if you could see the sun sinking below the holizon without any cloud. The local people told me they seldom see the scene due to the cloud.

If you don’t prefer a croud of sightseers, it is very recommendable for you. In addition to their nature and foods, all of people there are very warm and friendly.

It is very important when you visit the island since the ferry leaves Kagoshima Bay at 23:00 on only Mondays and Fridays and from the treasure island at 6:05 on Wednesdays and Sundays. It takes about a half of a day to get to the island. For instance, if you leave Kagoshima Bay at 23:00 on Monday, you get there at 11:25 on Tuesday. And if you leave the island at 6:05 on Friday, you arrive at 18:50 on Saturday.

Additonally, the part of the bus after arriving at the Kagoshima airport and that of ferry will need to be more explained.

You will find the bus terminal and the ticket vending machine just in front of the airport building. The ticket which is all they provide (JPY1,250), so you will never worry about which tickets you should choose. It takes around 50 min to go to the Tenmonkan (天文館) bus stop.

After getting out of the bus at Tenmonkan, you can walk to the ferry terminal to buy a ticket for 15 min. Please search the address on the Google map “6 Honkoshinmachi, Kagoshima, Kagoshima Prefecture 892–0814.” Purchase a one way ticket at first (JPY8,020)

Waiting for the departure of the ferry until 23:00 you can wander around the bay. There is a mall including restaurants near the ferry terminal. Take a break there.

Finally, it’s time to jump on the ferry, and enjoy 12-hour-cruise.

* The ferry coming back to Kagoshima Bay arrives at 18:50, so it is recommended to stay that night around there before heading for Tokyo or somewhere. Green Guest House is very close to the ferry terminal and reasonable to stay.
