Non-Mainstream Guide in Japan’s Old Town: NOT Bad

Yusukes

Asakusa, which is famous for Kaminarimon Gate and Sensoji Temple, is one of the most popular tourist spots in Tokyo. But that is not it. There are many attractive streets except the main street called Nakamise Shopping Street from the gate to the temple though they are a little difficult to find. Most of tourists don’t recognize them because they take the same route to and from those landmarks. However, the streets are hidden behind the main one. So, let’s see the most interesting one of them!!

At first, pass through the Kaminarimon Gate and walk along the Nakamise Shopping Street. Of course, you can enjoy shopping on the street at first.

And then, if you face a cross road and can see the SKYTREE on your right, you will see a red gate on your left. Turn left and pass the gate. That is another attractive street called Denboin Street.

Denboin Street (伝法院通り)

When you start walking on the street, you will find a lot of tiny shops which sell Japanese traditional items such as Japanese sandles, SAMURAI sword.

ASAKUSA MENCHI

They provide minced pork cutlet, and people sometimes wait in a queue for that tasty food. But you can get it immediately if you have a little luck.

Rickshaw (Jinrikisha 人力車)

You may find rickshaw and the staff, and they take you around there (e.g. to Tokyo SKYTREE Town.) That will be your greatest experience in Japan.

*

DAIKATSU

Why don’t you drink a beer outside in the daytime? The Daikatsu is Japanese style pub “Izakaya”, and there are many seats outside. The snacks and tapas go well with beers and Hoppy, which tastes like a beer but is one of distilled spirits. Not HAPPY but HOPPY will make you happy!

KAGETSUDO

This is a cafe where you can rest and have melon bread (melon-flavored bread) and desserts. This melon bread is so famous since they sell 3,000 per a day, and you can’t buy it after sold out. Personally, I can get it around 2 pm. But it is recommended to visit here by noon.

KAGETSUDO Honten
Business hour: open from 9:00 and until the Melon bread is sold out (everyday)
Address: 2–7–13 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo

In fact, you can get directly to the cafe from the Sensoji Temple. Just turn left at the far end. You will face Nishi-sando Shopping Street, and it is located at the entrance of the street. So it will be good choice to get there after seeing the temple.
