About 8km from the Higashi-Mokoto city centre, on the way to Mount Mokoto, you’ll see on your left an 8 hectare moss phlox field atop a low hill. From April to early June, the field is filled with tiny red, pink, white and purple flowers no bigger than 1.5cm.
Say “Kamiyubetsu” and the first thing that comes to mind is “tulips”. The tulip is even the town flower. Kamiyubetsu’s tulip park has 1.2 million tulips of 120 different kinds! Looking down on the garden from the observation platform on a Dutch windmill, it’s like a dream world.

Furano is well known for its lavender fields, but there are many more kinds of flowers that begin blooming in May, welcoming visitors to the area. In May there are Lupines and Tulips. In June, there are Blue Salvia and Poppies. From late June the early Lavender begins to bloom, and by mid July reaches its peak season. August brings Sunflowers and Cosmos, and from September to October Yellow Mustard and Dahlias decorate the refreshing fall season. It is also fun to search for wildflowers that bloom in the fields and mountains surrounding Furano. There are many rare flowers that bloom in the wetlands and highlands, so you may spot some when trekking or climbing.
NOTE:In this red-brick building surrounded by the greenery of Budogaoka Park, you can tour Furano’s wine factory and cellar and even sample some at the kiosk on the second floor. For those who would like to drink their fill, the Furano Wine House is right nearby. Open later in summer, until 6:00pm.
