Takayama old street is a good place to have a food tour for the whole afternoon. It were listed as sites of The World Heritage at the 19th UNESCO board. Gassho-zukuri is a house built of wooden beams combined to form a steep thatched roof that resembles two hands together.The structure is built to suit the environment in Shirakawa. It is made to with stand heavy snowfall.The house face north and south, to minimize wind resistance.


During the winter, because of the heavy snow, traffic is not allowed to drive into the village, so we can only walk to see the cultural heritage.


To make it even better, the village organizes special illumination events on selected Sunday and Monday evenings in January and February that attract plenty of tourists. During the light-up event, many of the village's gassho-zukuri farmhouses are lit up from 17:30 to 19:30.

The name Kenrokuen literally means "Garden of the Six Sublimities", referring to spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, abundant water and broad views, which according to Chinese landscape theory are the six essential attributes that make up a perfect garden.


In spring, visitors can see plum blossoms in the southern end of the garden as they bloom around mid February to the end March, just before the cherry blossom season begins. Cherry trees, which usually bloom around Kenrokuen around mid April, can be found along the streams through the northeastern side of the garden.
