Why mountains?
The campaign to have a Mountain Day was a longstanding cause for hiking and mountain-related groups, who wanted to celebrate Japan’s terrain and its connection to the nation’s geography and culture.
Japan also likes to have something specific to celebrate on each public holiday, such as Greenery Day in May, Marine Day in July and Respect for the Aged Day in September, though most people treat them as just another day off.
History of Mountain Day
Because the kanji (Chinese characters used in written Japanese) for “eight”, 八, looks a bit like the sides of a mountain.
Also “11” looks a bit like two trees, say some. Many municipalities had also already designated the date as one to celebrate mountains and, unusually, there were no other public holidays in August.
Hankyu Travel released Top 10 search queries on the keywords related to the mountain. Because it is a search on the travel site, it seems that there are more mountaineering with main tourism than full-scale climbing, especially mountains where even beginners are easy to climb are ranked in.
１. Mt. Fuji (ふ じ さ ん) <Shizuoka Prefecture>

２. Mt. Ibuki (い ぶ き さ ん) <Shiga Prefecture>

Height: 1,984m
Mount Gassan is the highest of the Three Mountains of Dewa in the ancient province of Dewa (modern-day Yamagata prefecture). The Gassan Shrine stands at the mountain’s summit, 1984 meters above sea level.
Due to heavy winter snowfall, the mountain and shrine are inaccessible for long periods of the year; however, skiing is possible on the mountain from April to mid-summer.
